    and now the word "server" has no meaning anymore to that massive group of people

        @freeplay

        In 2016 discord text-chat was basically IRC with some bells and whistles, and voice chat was 'just enough' for TeamSpeak users to migrate

          bonus:

          Discord has always called it "Guilds" internally, not "Server"/"Servers".

          It was purely marketing.

          @alexia i think it's called servers because it's just trying to mimic irc which gets me a little mad because... well it's one software (that probably distributes load across multiple servers but that's not my point uhhhh anyway) that can have groupings of channels, which itself could have sub-groupings (i think guilds are groupings of channels you can join, and then you can then have other channels you can join inside those which are under their own categories)

            @alexia i mean its probably just because it was easy to use, free, and better than the alternatives a lot of people were using (teamspeak people had to pay for and didn't like paying for, Skype)

              @pastthepixels

              Discord's UI design is very much inspired by IRC, it's like baked into their fuckin' DNA

              Memberlist on the right, channels on the left, messages in the space between with no bubbles; Just a list of messages

              But if you look at their old webpage, the VERY FIRST THING they advertise is how it's "100% Free" and "Never pay for voice chat again"; They
              even directly mention Skype and Teamspeak: web.archive.org/web/20150815173719/https://discordapp.com/

              Honestly, I should've checked their old websites. It's clear as fucking day they called it "Discord Server" just to shit on TS3.

                  @ipg i am specifically talking about how discord called it "Server" when it's anything but

                  looking back at their archived pages, they plastered it all over their site back in 2015 so I'd say the theory of "they called it Servers publicly only to shit on Teamspeak" probably checks out

                    @ipg I'm not tryna say it didn't have its advantages in 2015 and onward

                    I am nitpicking because I am angry about how when I say "Server", people my age attribute it to Discord automatically

                    Like no, mf, I mean something entirely different stop thinking discord

                          @niko @alexia @pastthepixels i mean slash commands did technically exist back then iirc, they were just purely internal commands

                          (this was before the bot api was even "official")
