In 2016 discord text-chat was basically IRC with some bells and whistles, and voice chat was 'just enough' for TeamSpeak users to migrate -

Discord has always called it "Guilds" internally, not "Server"/"Servers".
It was purely marketing.@alexia i think it's called servers because it's just trying to mimic irc which gets me a little mad because... well it's one software (that probably distributes load across multiple servers but that's not my point uhhhh anyway) that can have groupings of channels, which itself could have sub-groupings (i think guilds are groupings of channels you can join, and then you can then have other channels you can join inside those which are under their own categories) -
