Wait Hytales financial model is to monetize mods?

    Wtf.

So basically they struggle to make a game for ten years, now inform me that mods will be a monetized hellscape and in the meantime i could just play Vintage Story, made by a way smaller team with proper mod support, full linux support and you know ... working?

I am sorry, i do not understand the hype for Hytale whatsoever.

@catraxx@tech.lgbt Just write a mod loader manually, problem solved lmao [okay, it isn't that easy, but that depends on how Hytale's programming language and potentially runtime, but you get the point]

@jeremystartm Ok, but ... why tho? They really don't bring that much to the table.

@catraxx@tech.lgbt For fun. Doing unintended stuff is fun. Also I'd wait for the early access release and what they deliver.

@jeremystartm I am a bit disillusioned, tbh. They bought the game back from Riot and i kind of expected them to be better than them.

@catraxx @jeremystartm afaik the plan is they are monetised if the dev chooses for it to be (wherein there could be a percentage cut?), otherwise it's free or choose your price. So more like how Spigots website plugins for Minecraft are.

I think their more focused plan for an income stream to continue development is more to grow a built-in paid cosmetics library.

Generally i think cosmetics is usually the thing people are okay with being monetised in games, and also people feel mod makers deserve pay for their work ~ so that'd be why it looks this way. I also think Minecraft, Vintage Story and Hytale are all great, but different—and for different audiences 🙂

@sammypanda @jeremystartm With mods, all of these games can be whatever you want them to be. The difference is that only one of these developers so far hasn't made any bad decisions for the customer.

My trust these days is an extremely limited resource.
