@volpeon@icy.wyvern.rip The average dev-consumer communication about any open source project usually goes: "Hey guys I don't want to starve."
"I can't believe your greed. I hope you die." -

@volpeon funny enough I mentioned, when we planned doing that, that this is most likely going to be the reaction and create some bad blood or even bad PR. Because I was fully expecting that, based on other projects I was involved in.
But for everyone bothered by it: you can turn it off. For good. It's just not off by default, which technically could be done by packagers.

@volpeon none of the ones who read seem upset by this. Or I have offended everyone in my circle who would otherwise raise a stink about such to such an extent they won't talk to me.
Or I don't have a very big circle anymore.
This is the first I am seeing if any discourse involving the matter.

@Vallaferescense The social media distortion field probably makes it seem like a bigger controversy than it is. It's always like 3 clowns and then a billion posts about these clowns, like mine

@volpeon they did it last year as well assuming the distro didn't disable it.
I did donate earlier when they asked but only a few €
I like KDE, I hope krdp (server) gets the same feature set as gnomes although I think I heard SDDM needs replaced for login from RDP to be a thing for kde

@volpeon it's always hard to ask for funding but I should actually donate them some money -

@volpeon I started donating a little each time I get paid a few months ago. I never know when the next paycheck is and I did just get paid so I kinda appreciated the notif and spend about 30 min finding out I couldnt schedule it again myself to remind me each month if I forget.

@volpeon we love open source software just so long as the developers don't do anything unreasonable, like wanting to get paid

@volpeon KDE's been talking about doing this for a while too. It isn't a new idea for anyone paying attention.

There has been discussion on their blog too going back a year or so, if memory serves.
I'm happy they are asking for money. KDE is a great project and I want them to be sustainable.

@volpeon Me was like: Oh yeah its december again I guess. The easiest time to get donations going. And since they are not wikipedia they actually might need the money. -

@volpeon@icy.wyvern.rip I can remmeber the "shitstorm" that hit Denis Pushkarev (the developer of core-js) because he asked for a donation when you installed it wit a simple text message.
Its all the shit over and over again. Like just because you are doing open source doesn't mean you don't have to pay rent, groceries and other bills. That you have a family you need to support.
Especially to those people who goes full time it can be a big financial burden. Linus Torvald, Daniel Stenberg and others are just the poster boys who have enough of a funding to proceed but a lot of second or third level open source developers lack this because they are invisible or only relevant in a small niche.
I really don't understand why they get so much reprimand for the simple question of being able to pay their fucking bills! -

@volpeon gnome is doing it too apparently
I don't mid personally, it's not super obnoxious like Wikipedia's for instance.@mikoto Yeah, I got it a few weeks ago. A simple notification that disappeared when dismissed, it really couldn't be less annoying
