also some guy from uni admin is giving some talk about AI usage, and he queried a simple question in a local model that chugged (CPU usage at 50%, RAM maxxed out) to run on his 2020 laptop

am i supposed to believe this is the future, when a query online or looking up the answer online would have required so much less?

"but how can have sovereign control of the tools that we use to rent thinking to?" says the man in a suit

"we gave money to one company that people rent thinking to but they also use others in their life and it leaks data about our work" says the man in a suit

honestly that way of thinking about the big AI tools ("thought landlords") really crystalizes the ethical problem of delegating to AI companies that i couldn't articulate too well before

like, yeah, there's the catastrophic environmental impact (that you could extent to almost all modern IT), the horrible social aspect of generating torrents of what amounts to polyester but for thoughts, and the deskilling and devaluation of workers (creative or not). it's also not entirely the problem of delegating to a tool (we've been doing that with memory for as long as written history has existed)

companies have literally invented the concept of leasing out the ability to wonder things

ok if the way this person (who teaches at med schools and seems to have a fairly positional role in various places) is anything representation of the future of AI usage in healthcare, we are so utterly fucked

tag yourself chat are you high functioning or low functioning (because it will determine how long you get on the computer)

also she has a slide where she talks about "regression of low-functioning autistic students after vacations" and like, every kid at my school when i was a kid also forgot a pretty substantial chunk of school stuff during the two weeks of vacation that's called "taking a break"

"autistic children are very attached to the computer"

hello, professional autist here. Computers are good because when i tell them to do something, in general, they do it, with very little ambiguity. Hope that helps.

holy fuck the guy presented a big diagram of "trending security topics"

                                        MADE BY CHATGPT

while explaining it he had to stop in his explanations, multiple times, to say "this isn't correct but hey this is ChatGPT give it some slack"
