why do all modern browser options kind of suck in their own way
- chromium / blink is absolute shit, there's no debate about that
- meanwhile gecko gets left in the dust more often than not because people keep optimising for chromium's engine
- servo, while existing and being pretty neat, is utilised by absolutely no one
- ladybird- oh don't get me started on *that* shitshow
- webkit is certainly a thing but not really cross-platform nowadays (safari for windows *was* a thing - from major versions 3 through 5. that's it lmfao)
- edgehtml is very much dated at this point (+ in my experience this version of microsoft edge was always kind of sluggish, more often than not)
- all the other browsers who had unique engines switched to chromium / blink -
@awoo@gts.apicrim.es @q66@gts.q66.moe
any major platform
just say windows -
@q66 name me a single browser based on webkit that works on any major platform (that being the three most-well-known ones - windows, macOS and Linux). not anything unmaintained anymore, rather something that is up-to-date.

@awoo kind of a bold take: WebKit is actually the most multiplatform, since it's used by Sony and Nintendo for their respective consoles. Also GNOME Web
@ch0ccyra1n fair point! :3 however in my case I meant desktop operating systems, and something I could just install and use today

@ch0ccyra1n though to be fair, when talking about browser engines used by consoles, there also was the weird Nintendo DSi browser which was based on Opera's browser engine (and regularly ran out of RAM which caused it to no longer load images).

@awoo@gts.apicrim.es @ch0ccyra1n@emeraldsocial.org gnome web is perfectly usable on linux although it is filled with gnome-isms
it sort of works on windows (wsl) but that would be annoying -

@awoo@gts.apicrim.es @ch0ccyra1n@emeraldsocial.org would be cool if orion's variant of webkit was open-source (i've heard it's faster than the normal one)

@tauon @ch0ccyra1n wait did they really make some modifications to WebKit? that might actually explain why I had such a bad experience on my Intel MacBook Air and friends on their x86 hackintoshes with that browser, while it worked just fine on Apple Silicon (aarch64) :floofWoozy:

@Li forgot to clarify in the original post but I mainly meant desktop operating systems. (and I'm aware that even then it's more widespread since even Haiku has a WebKit-based browser, Epiphany/GNOME Web, but I was including the one platform that only saw Safari versions 3 through 5.
