Um die betrieblichen Auswirkungen des ICE-4-Abnahmestopps abzumildern, setzte die Deutsche Bahn ab dem 3. Juli 2019 einen ICE-2-Langzug auf der Strecke von Hamburg über Hannover, Kassel, Würzburg und Nürnberg nach München ein. Dieser bestand neben den zwei Triebköpfen aus neun Mittelwagen und fuhr in einem eintägigen Umlauf als ICE 2797 und ICE 2862 als Ersatz für ICE 587 und 782.
