    I would've expected 4K PC monitors to be the default by now.
    I bought my 4K display in 2016, so 9 years ago. In that same time span, I had gone from a 1024x768 CRT to a 1680x1050 display to a 1080p display. Why are we stagnating there? It's making my life as an emoji designer unnecessarily difficult.

      @volpeon@icy.wyvern.rip it still sucks with scaling sometimes and also if you want a monitor with a high refresh rate and dont wanna overspend you would probably go for 1440p (to be fair im not sure what the pricing situation is like these days but im gonna assume 4k is probably still way more expensive for high refresh rate monitors then 1440p or 1080p)

      tbh 1440p is the sweet spot in my opinion, even if it doesnt scale right you can still read it but you wont see any pixels on medium sized displays
      (source: got a crappy old 4k monitor as my 2nd monitor and a 144hz 1440p monitor as my main which i bought a couple years ago)

        @volpeon
        To be honest, I much prefer working on my two 1080p monitors at home than on the 4k curved monitor at work. For standard office work with many programs open and 3 virtual desktops, I find it more convenient, and the quality and readability are fine.

          @volpeon People still gravitate towards 1080p, but 1440p is the sweet spot imo.

          Why? Gamers, probably. Gamers and cheap office monitors.

            @volpeon@icy.wyvern.rip you can probably blame gpu tech stagnating like hell for that

            no point buying a 4k monitor when the gpu you need to drive it is even more expensive

              @arch @volpeon I'll take 1440p as a desktop monitor as long as it's physically big enough that I don't need to fiddle with fractional scaling. On my laptop, however, I'll probably stick to 1080p until I can make the jump to 2160p to straight from 100% to 200% scaling

                @HurricaneWeasel@mastodon.world @volpeon@icy.wyvern.rip yeah, I don’t want to know how many scaling issues might happen on my setup

                  @volpeon Gaming I guess. Beefier displays needs beefier hardware. And with how much those cards cost now.... 1440p seems more the sweet spot anyway

                  Also I guess for everything else (like office and stuff) You just don't get much benefit from the extra pixels?

                  these reasons are made up of course. Its jusf because the industry wants to see you suffer

                  Also how exactly would that make your life easier. Bigger Emotes still would not be a thing

                    @stefan Using Mastodon on a 4K display with UI scaling set to 200% leads to emojis being rendered at 40x40 rather than 20x20. They aren't larger, but you can see fine details which helps a lot with legibility.
