Ok I'm already liking https://delta.chat by the fact that it Just Works
It uses your email address, and changing over to an alias of that address - while still a tad of a hassle - is not the incredibly frustrating experience that it was for matrix; and you still keep your message history
You basically just send a message to every person or chat you care about after changing it, and then on their devices it'll change over automatically
Encryption doesn't seem to exist for group chats, only directly, but imo that's entirely fine
Also there's read receipts??? In email?
Like, if you told me this is email, I wouldn't believe you until I looked under the hood, it feels like a bit more scuffed WhatsApp, but at least it WORKS, and it's self-hostable (as self-hostable email servers are), and decentralised

@ShadowJonathan@tech.lgbt looks to me as if group chats are encrypted too
