Oh goodness, any console hackers remember the 'Kamikaze' trick to unlock Xbox 360 Lite-On drives to take it out of read-only mode?

@maddy@is.redhairpale.skin
that's insane, how did anyone figure that out lol -

@maddy Oh lord I forgot about that one
I still have some hacking tools from that era somewhere
My modded 360 still works like a charm!@usernameswift I still have my probe for Falcon/Jasper-era Lite-On drives, my X360USB Pro V2, and some other goodies. Lots more RGH tools around though. -
@usernameswift@pleromer.net @maddy@is.redhairpale.skin seriously! they're much better hackers than i am, i just couldn't stomach risking such an expensive (at the time) piece of hardware for experimentation

@jiub @usernameswift Thankfully drives and parts were pretty easy to get, and relatively cheap (compared to a new console). As long as you got a good drive dump with keys, bricking the old drive isn't a huge loss. Eventually, some started offering replacement PCBs with a toggle that let you lock/unlock the flash manually.
As RGH became more popular, drive flashing kinda died off. I still know how and have the tools to do it for most models though! -

Original packaging and everything -
@maddy Ayyyy
Original packaging and everything@usernameswift I fucked up the USB port on mine trying to solder a cable directly to the pads rather than using the Mini USB port...
...Any chance you'd consider selling me yours? 🥺 -
@jiub @usernameswift Let's just say that Xbox 360 modding has been a hyperfixation with a second-wind when I improved my soldering skills and tackled RGH!
@maddy@is.redhairpale.skin @usernameswift@pleromer.net that's so cool! i guess that's a bit easier to risk if only the drive had to be replaced, for some reason i thought that the drive was permanently cryptographically paired to the motherboard in the 360

@jiub @usernameswift Oh, it is, but as long as you have the keys/dump and a same-model drive, you're good@jiub @usernameswift You can technically use a different model drive and insert your drive key, but that sets off AP (anti-piracy) flags that can get you banned from Xbox Live. The console keeps track of the model of the drive shipped with the system, so it knows when you've replaced a Lite-On with Hitachi, or vice-versa.

@usernameswift@pleromer.net @maddy@is.redhairpale.skin the only console modding i've done is wii and 3ds modding because they're so easy to soft mod
-
@usernameswift @jiub AFAIK you can use any of the phat 360 DVD drives with 0800 firmware to rip game discs and use as general CD/DVD drive. If you don't need to rip game discs, I'd use a modern ASUS or LG drive instead as they tend to be good dumping drives (they work great with various tools used by the Redump project, and so on)

I will unfortunately have to decline that offer because I still use mine, but there must be some out there -
@jiub @usernameswift I got my start modding my friends' PSPs at recess in elementary school for $10 a pop with a Pandora's battery and Magic Memory Stick :3
