@volpeon The difference being you can scroll past the first post in a thread pretty easily. A novel in my timeline is a pain in the dick to scroll past.
@woe2you I don't think I've ever used a frontend that won't collapse longer posts automatically

@volpeon I can't find that setting in Mastodon for Android, and if it exists at all it's off by default.

It depends heavily on the frontend. Maybe Wafrn will be fine for it since its UI is derived from Tumblr, maybe Misskey might suit it better or on par? But Mastodon? Hoh boy.
Said it before but when I saw a longer post than normal coming from Mastodon, my brain switches off, and the collapse feature doesn't help there either since it's an issue with the reading experience. Maybe it'd be slightly better now I'm on Elvanse but Mastodon is certainly not good for that, and when a strong part of fedi is interoperability that becomes a problem quick when people post passionately about their subject and I just have to skip the post.
(on that note: on the ATProto end, Leaflet.pub seems to be popular for long-form blogging/notes with those a bit more aware of the protocol)

basically, the fediverse if misskey was the reference instead of mastodon:

@volpeon @woe2you I did but I also made a patch to fix it
https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/8205 (2018-08-14… wow that was a long time ago) -
@volpeon Honestly, the argument that "character limits prevent posts from getting too long" always feels like ableism to me
Let me infodump about a niche topic that I know too much about, for fuck sake
