    I wonder, are the effects better or worse for DDR4 vs DDR5, or does it simply not matter at all

    @volpeon I got very lucky with my living room build and got 16GB of 2400MHz for £20 off eBay

    Now that's slow ram but the board doesnt want anything faster than 2666MHz anyway (es modt chip)

      @volpeon This makes me want to take my old computers apart.

      I know that this won't work, but a fox can still dream

        @volpeon I wanted to see what I paid for 32 GB in 2022 but the invoice does not list components from the build-to-order. I don't really remember that the two DDR4 modules cost then. But I do remember it was fairly cheap so I took 2x 16. Crucial. Funny how it's all history now thanks to billionaire bros.

        I would assume it's a similar effect. Mostly DDR5 is used in datacenters but DDR4 is probably far less supply by now as most production was moved to the new standard.

          @volpeon also that machine is a lot more stable on windows (although it did crash earlier)

          Its either arc or a combo of thr board + arc isn't playing nice in linux

            @volpeon@icy.wyvern.rip

            When I was looking at prices for replacement parts on my desktop, the processor (10 cores at 2 Ghz) is down to $200. The 128 GB of Kingston ECC DDR3 RAM are still $320. Those are 13 year old sticks of RAM still at $40 a pop.

            Oh, and that triples to upgrade to 1866 MHz instead of 1333.

                  @volpeon when I bought like 256GB of ecc ddr4 like a year ago it was the least expensive part of my NAS. Now its worth more then the rest of the machine combined

                          @volpeon Rookie numbers

                          The 64 GB of DDR5 I bought went from $359 Australian Dollars (AUD) TO $1,099 BY THE SAME FUCKING RETAILER!

                          This is beyond ridiculous.

                              gonna go check the RAM I got in my PC. It's a bit complicated since it's built by a company and not by me so…

                                yeah so a newer model didn't have that jump, it's around £745. I can't even find the original price now lol.
