@volpeon i think that's a social issue more than a technical one. even IM platforms you'll still find people like me and i guess you who don't mind if several hours or even days pass between messages, and who've known a period where cellphones weren't as widespread nor as powerful as today so it was ok for people to just not be reachable for several hours per day.
nowadays you get people swearing at you if you don't reply within 5min...

@volpeon to contrast that: forums weren't always all that great either. from my experience there was many cases of elitist users, power-hungry mods, internal political infighting and also uploading images through a third party host sucked and now all we have are dead links

@MagicLike accidents are often caused by several things that go wrong. sure the main culprits are NASA managers of the time but the design of the shuttle and its lack of abort modes made the consequences of their stupidity more drastic

also eating up all the budget of other cool things like probes, my girl venus deserves to be admired from closer up

(but yes, it did look super cool and i totally get your point)
