And in the age of soldered SSDs, some companies don't even bother wiping the disks before giving the laptops to recyclers. They just drill a hole through the laptop where the SSD is and call it a day. -

So you'd need disk encryption, which they should be doing anyway because computers can get stolen quite easily. -

It's not possible as the way the controllers a programmed they don't check if the data is properly erased, that's done to avoid further possible quantum effects/reduce usage cycles
