    @alexia what does that have to do with element?
    Hosting matrix.org has to be expensive. Relying only on donations will be difficult. Additionally this might push more people to other homeservers, improving federation.

    @shadowwwind

    Copying this from a different reply thread as I can't be bothered
    from day one a VC-funded, For-Profit entity took over a large part of the work.

    From day one, Element / Riot / New Vector Inc. has existed with the purpose of making money and selling B2B or government contracts. They've violently ripped away control over Synapse, Dendrite and other projects from the foundation as well as financial support to keep the home server running. They are not a good influence on the project.

        Fuck it.

        List of alternative projects that you can support instead:
        (not guaranteed to fill the same niche as matrix)

        -
        Polyphony's Polyproto – Building a simple federated identity and chat protocol that's extensible and "boring". Lead by people (donate)
        -
        Delta Chat – Novel chat-app built on Email Protocols under the hood. E2EE, with specialised servers and zero info required for signup; WebXDC for in-chat apps. (donate)
        - [More Suggestions?]

          @alexia I've also followed and liked Jami (formerly Ring) for years - uses some of the same P2P discovery type tech as BitTorrent but for decentralized messaging: https://jami.net/

          Not quite aiming for the same niche, though. Then there's stuff like Mumble (https://www.mumble.info/) that's still going if you need just a 'gaming' voice chat app and can host a server for it.

            @kithop I do know of Jami, I'm just not sure if I'd recommend it as I really don't know who's actually behind it

                @alexia Fair enough! I believe it's a GNU project and developed by a French Canadian Linux distro company (Savoir-Faire), GPLv3, etc. but I don't know too much more than that.
